Skating Over Rough Surfaces
As we all know, skating over rough surfaces can be scary. Here are a few tips that will help you feel more comfortable skating on a rough surface.

One way to get across is to take little steps, almost like walking. (With the road being rough, your skates will not roll, so you will find that you are walking anyway.) When you are walking across the rough road, stay relaxed, bend at the ankles, and keep your hands in front of you in case you stumble and fall forward.

If you are skating and see a rough section approaching, you will find that it is a lot easier to roll across the surface than to skate across it.

  1. To roll across the rough section you will need speed to make it all the way across.
  2. You want to be relaxed, bent at the ankles, hands in front of you.
  3. As you approach the rough section keep your skates shoulder width apart, slide one skate forward and one skate back so that the back wheel of one skate is at the front wheel of the other skate with your skates still shoulder width apart. This is called the Scissor, and is designed to distribute your weight into a larger area. If you have problems doing the scissor, bend your ankles more (not your knees). You can practice the scissor rolling on a sidewalk into the grass. The grass will have the same effect, even more than a rough road. (Plus, if you fall in the grass, it is a lot softer than the cement.)
